Is deforestation a problem in PNG?
Deforestation is not a major environmental problem in Papua New Guinea. The most recent statistics from the United Nations Forest and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) indicate that PNG's forest area has hardly changed over the past 25 years, and states that the rate of forest loss is effectively zero percent.
Is illegal logging a problem in PNG?
As with deforestation, illegal logging is not a significant problem in Papua New Guinea. The national government has hired an independent auditor to monitor all log exports, which ensures relevant tax obligations are met. The government is also working with other governments in key export markets to ensure that it meets any requirements for imports.
What does RH do for the livelihoods of local people?
RH is a significant long-term investor in Papua New Guinea. Its operations contribute to employment, government taxation revenue and export revenue, thereby contributing to PNG's overall growth. At the local level, RH pays royalties to local communities for the use of their forest resources. At the same time, the company provides a range of services and facilities for local communities, including health and education facilities, transport infrastructure, and community facilities.
