Dr Ruth Turia, Director of Forest Policy and Planning at the PNG Forest Authority, has been appointed to the esteemed position of Chair of the APEC Experts Group on Illegal Logging and Associated Trade (EGILAT). Dr Turia will hold this position for the years 2016 and 2017. EGILAT is responsible for providing APEC heads of state with expert analysis and advice regarding the promotion of legal timber trade networks.
Dr Turia has an impressive CV, having worked for 34 years on various aspects of forestry at the local, national and international level. As Director of Forest Policy and Planning at PNGFA, Dr Turia has been instrumental in managing and securing international funding for important forest policy initiatives, such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency's technical cooperation project.
